It was announced today that Stanford University’s Taipei Research Center is preparing to open in September of this year.
According to the university’s announcement, the research center in Taipei—the university’s fifth international branch—will focus on the training of high-level research into the Chinese language, for both undergraduate and graduate students. In the initial stages, a select number of students have registered to enroll in preparation to become the center’s first formal students.
The Stanford Center’s first appointed director, Associate Professor David S. Nivison, presently teaches Chinese and philosophy at Stanford University.
In selecting Taipei as the location, the center will particularly emphasize instruction and training by experienced language teachers.
Management of the center will be overseen by a special committee of professors from Stanford’s History and Asian Languages departments.
Because Stanford’s Taipei and Tokyo centers receive both graduate and undergraduate students, director of Stanford’s Graduate School Howard Brooks will also supervise. Howard Brooks has also headed two other Stanford language centers in University of Hamburg and Bad boll, Germany.
